Buying Kids Watches

If your child has finally reached the milestone of telling time, you may be looking at kids watches as a present to mark the occasion. Receiving your first watch is an important event for a child, and serves as a great reward for learning the difficult skill of telling time. There are many great choices in a watch for your kids; brand name watchmakers create superhero watches, cartoon character watches, and Disney watches. 

Two of the major considerations in shopping for child’s timepieces are price and quality.  A child’s watch is sure to be subject to a lot of wear and tear, so there are basically two schools of thought on how to purchase. One is to buy a very inexpensive watch.  Children’s sport watches can be purchased at discount stores for under $10. If it gets broken, it is easily replaced.

The other option is to spend a bit more for a watch that is more durable, hopefully ensuring that it will endure the wear and tear of a child. Which way you decide to go is largely dependent on your child’s personality. My oldest went through six inexpensive watches within two years.  At age 11, he fell in love with Relic watches, and begged for one for Christmas. We thought he was finally mature enough to handle it, and bought it as a gift.  The watch didn’t make it to Spring Break. On the other hand, my middle child got a Spiderman watch when he turned 5, which he stills wears every day. He will be six this month, and the watch hardly has a scratch on it.

Once you’ve made your choice in a watch, you have many options of where to purchase. Most department stores carry watches for kids, as do many online retailers. If you are purchasing a character watch, you are mostly limited by which retailers carry which characters.
