Omega watches :: functional and distinctive dive watches & more

feature 1

Sports enthusiasts demand ruggedness and accuracy in watches. Omega watches are a popular choice, especially for dive watches. Among diving enthusiasts, the Seamaster line of watches by Omega ranks as one of the best. This watch is waterproof to more than 300 meters, with a helium escape valve and certified chronometer movement. It is another in the long line of top quality watches by Omega.

Omega began making watches in 1848,when a Swiss watchmaker named Louis Brandt began making pocket watches in a small workshop. Originally, the company went by the name Louis Brandt and Frere, changing its name several times before finally settling on the name Omega Limited in 1982. Brandt was one of the first Swiss watchmakers to use the divided assembly line. This was an important innovation in watch making, because it greatly improved production efficiency, dropping prices significantly. Omega produced its first wristwatch in 1902, and quickly became an industry leader.

To the Moon and Back

Omega carries the distinction of being the first watch worn on the moon, as well as the nickname, "the moon watch". Neil Armstrong wore an Omega Speedmaster, as did all Apollo crews. In 1974 Omega introduced its first high frequency quartz wristwatch, which boasted ten times greater precision than previous quartz watches. This was the first watch to be awarded a Marine Chronometers Certificate. Omegas also have the distinction of being featured in four James Bond movies.

Today, Omega's line of diving watches is available from fine jewelers, dive shops and online retailers. Prices begin at around $250, though the higher end Seamaster watches generally run around $1200 and higher. If you are looking for a beautiful and reliable watch for a diver, you can't go wrong with an Omega. They also make a variety of other fine watches for men and women, as well as a high-end jewelry line that features items shaped like the Omega symbol from the Greek alphabet.
